A safe offers great protection to its content in addition to high level of security in which a burglar would have much difficulties with. Most common types of safes are combination. Although the high level of protection they provide may be considered as an advantage, on other times it can be a disadvantage. There can be many times where the locking mechanism will start to malfunction, or a combination that was forgotten. In such case, only a professional locksmith or a safe-cracker would be able to help you.

However, before calling a professional to the rescue, you should check with manufacturer of the safe as it might still be under warranty which could save you some money.
